Deloitte Fires Employee from India Accused of Running Global Hacking Gang

Deloitte India has terminated an employee this week accused of running a global hacking gang, WhiteInt. The gang was exposed in a sting operation conducted by “The Sunday Times” and the Bureau of Investigative Journalism. This expose revealed that several Indian hackers were offering services to hack into private email accounts and messages of victims after receiving intel from autocratic states and wealthy businessmen.

The leader of the gang was a 31-year-old man, Aditya Jain, who was working as an associate director of Deloitte India’s cyber unit. A Deloitte spokesperson spoke to Economic Times and said, “We are aware of the recent media reports outlining serious allegations about an individual who used to work for Deloitte India. This individual no longer works for Deloitte India.” According to reports, the hacking firm had information of several famous personalities from around the world. Among these personalities whose confidential information was accessed were former Pakistani president Pervez Musharraf, former United Kingdom chancellor Phillip Hammond, Swiss president Ignazio Cassis, and more.

Aditya Jain was hired by Deloitte in February and was previously employed by one of the Big Four firms in the country (EY, PwC, KPMG, Deloitte) until March 2021. Cybersecurity has been one of the fastest-growing industries in India over the past years for the Big Firms, but there was a lack of cybersecurity experts. According to a Big Four cyber consultant, the firms run basic background checks on all new employees, but some “black sheep” slip through. Jain had been running the hacking firm for seven years before the expose about the illicit operations had come out.
